In reality the word RACE means as a woman of COLOR I AM in a constant contest or competition to achieve, fight and repeatedly prove that I’m just as good as the next person. And yes, there are times it hurts to know that I’m not accepted due to COLOR (RACE). My 30 years within the profit and non-profit sectors as a woman of COLOR (RACE) has strengthened me to appreciate who I AM. During my tenure at the American Jazz Museum, I had the pleasure of inspiring elementary scholars to senior citizens, musicians, celebrities, master artists and Ambassadors to explore Afro-American culture, history and the struggle of being colored. For two years at Hallmark Cards I managed, planned and implemented Black History Month events that engaged, educated and involved my co-workers in gaining a deeper understanding of Afro-American history. Throughout my career I have been honored to assist organizations and people from all walks of life by building bridges to connect and communicate. The facilitator of the meeting asked, “How do you deal with being different?” I replied back asking to please explain the definition of “different” when it applies to human beings? I stated, “I’m not different because in this country, I AM A HUMAN BEING, and I shouldn’t have to explain or apologize for the COLOR (RACE) of my skin.”
I recall that one afternoon at work, myself and 29 others attended a Diversity, Equity, Accessibility, and Inclusion session. So, why is the word RACE used to describe human beings in this country and around the world?
